Canadian construction firms looking for more than 500 Irish workers

More than 30 western Canadian companies will attend a jobs expo in Belfast today while, a similar event will take place in Dublin on Saturday.The Western Canada Construction Job Expo takes place in the Grand Ballroom at the Europa Hotel, Belfast from 12-8pm today.

The Dublin event will take place in the Convention Centre Dublin (Liffey A Suite), North Wall Quay, from 10am to 5pm on Saturday.

Businesses are hoping to fill vacancies for positions such as architects and welders.

The Vice President of the British Columbian Construction Association, Abigail Fulton, says Irish workers are highly sought after.

“Over the last couple of years actually we’ve been very successful in attracting really highly skilled tradespeople,” she said.

“I think Ireland can boast, if not the best, almost the best tradespeople in the world – and a lot of them are coming to Canada and I can tell you that the employers that we’ve helped find people come back all the time and say: ‘Can you get me some more?’.” Source: The Irish Examiner
